The Scale-up Worker visa is more than just a route into the UK job market, it’s a pathway for highly skilled professionals to join some of Britain’s most ambitious companies. This visa combines the stability of initial sponsorship with the flexibility to work unsponsored later, offering career growth and a pathway to settlement.

What is the Scale-up Worker visa in the UK?

Introduced in August 2022, this visa allows you to work for a high-growth UK company (a scale-up business) that holds an A-rated sponsor licence. You begin in a six-month sponsored role; afterwards, you can work without sponsorship, start your own business, or pursue further studies, all while continuing towards settlement.

Why should you choose the Scale-up Worker visa?

This visa stands out because it offers:

  • Six months of sponsorship, then open work rights.
  • No requirement for large investments or capital.
  • Access to a wide range of roles with competitive salaries.
  • Eligibility for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years.
  • The ability to bring your partner and children, who can work and study freely.
  • Freedom to change jobs, start a venture, volunteer, or study after the initial stage.

Who can apply for the Scale-up Worker visa?

You must:

  • Have a job offer from an approved scale-up business for at least 6 months.
  • Hold a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).
  • Work in an eligible occupation listed in Appendix Skilled Occupations (SOC 2020).
  • Earn at least £39,100 per year or meet the going rate for your role if higher.
  • Meet the English language requirement (CEFR B1 or above).
  • Have sufficient funds to support yourself unless exempt.

What qualifies as a scale-up business?

A company must, in the 3 years before obtaining its sponsor licence:

  • Grow by 20% or more annually in turnover or staff count.
  • Have at least 10 employees at the start of that period.

Only companies with an A-rated sponsor licence on the official list can hire under this route. Refer to our Scale-up Sponsor Licence Guide for additional information.

What is the difference between the sponsored and unsponsored stages?

During your first six months in the UK, you must work for the employer that sponsored your visa. If you want to change jobs during this time, you must notify the Home Office and get approval. Can you bring your family on a Scale-up Worker visa?

Yes. Your partner and children under 18 can live, work, and study in the UK for the duration of your visa. If they joined you later, they can extend their visa to complete their own 5-year qualifying period for ILR, ensuring they meet settlement requirements independently.
