UK High Potential Individual Visa Application Guide 2026

UK High Potential Individual Visa Application Guide 2026

Overview

The High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa is one of the UK Government’s recent introductions to the UK immigration categories, primarily aimed at individuals with education from prestigious universities.

Unlike some other visas, it does not require any endorsement or sponsorship process. If you have graduated from a bachelor’s or higher programme in the last five years, and your university was ranked in the top 50 universities for that year according to the month and year of your graduation, you meet the relevant criteria. The list of eligible universities may vary from year to year and can be found on the Home Office website.

Key Advantages of the High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa

The HPI visa allows you to be self-employed or take up almost any employment except as a professional sportsperson. It also allows you to switch to other long-term migration categories, such as the Skilled Worker visa.

As a result, this visa allows you to:

  • Fast-track exceptional global talent with academic merit directly into the UK’s workforce or entrepreneurial ecosystem.
  • Simplify your immigration path without sponsorship or a job offer – ideal for recent graduates aiming to launch careers or ventures in the UK.
  • Benefit from a family-friendly and flexible visa route, offering both professional opportunities and personal stability.

The UK High Potential Individual visa offers:

  • Work flexibility from day one. You can work for almost any employer, for yourself, or study, so no sponsor is needed once the visa is granted.
  • Access without previous UK connections. You can apply without a job offer, investment, or offer of employment in the UK at the time of application.
  • Eligibility based on prestigious academic achievement. Applicants who have graduated within the last five years from a top global university (as designated by the UK’s official rankings list) qualify.
  • Multiple entry permit. Allows multiple entries to and from the UK.
  • Generous duration. A two-year stay if holding a bachelor’s or master’s degree, or three years if holding a PhD, giving ample time to establish yourself.
  • No minimum salary or funds required. Removes financial barriers commonly seen in work or entrepreneur visa routes.
  • Family inclusion. Dependants (spouse/partner and children) can join with the same rights to live, work, or study in the UK.

Duration of HPI Visa

Depending on the programme you graduated from, the length of your visa changes: for bachelor’s and master’s programmes, you will be granted a two-year visa, whereas for PhD and other doctorate programmes, it is three years.

Key Requirements for HPI Visa

On top of graduating from an eligible top-50 university, UKVI also requires you to prove your English skills to at least CEFR B1 level unless you are a citizen of an English-speaking country or you have obtained an English language equivalency and comparability certificate from the relevant UK institution.

Knowledge of English

To be eligible for a High Potential Individual visa, you must show at least CEFR B1 level of English proficiency. This can be demonstrated by either being a national of a majority English-speaking country, having a degree taught 100% in English and confirmed by ECCTIS, or taking an English test at an approved test centre.

Maintenance

You must have sufficient savings in your bank account for at least 28 days to demonstrate you can support yourself. If you have been living in the UK for at least 12 months under another visa category, you will not be required to show savings.

Dependants

Your spouse and any children under the age of 18 can apply with you to join or remain with you under the High Potential Individual visa.

Visa Duration

The length of stay varies according to your qualification: two years for bachelor’s or master’s graduates, and three years for PhD or other doctorate graduates.

Switching to Other Routes

High Potential Individual Visa cannot be extended, and it does not give you the option to settle permanently in the UK. If you want to stay longer in the UK, you may be able to switch to a different visa, for example, a Skilled Worker visa or Global Talent Visa.

If you are eligible for another category, you can make an in-country application to switch to a different visa before your HPI visa expires.

Cost and Fees

You, your partner, or your children will each need to pay the application fee, the healthcare surcharge for each year of your stay, and prove that you have sufficient personal savings. You may check how much money you’ll need for High Potential Individual visa applications. Also, you may check the UK Visa Fees page for the most up-to-date application fees

Processing times

Waiting times vary depending on the location of the application. Once you’ve applied online, proved your identity and provided your documents, you’ll usually get a decision on your visa within:

  • 3 weeks, if you’re outside the UK
  • 8 weeks, if you’re inside the UK

A High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is one of the most flexible visas for professionals. It gives you permission to stay, work and look for a job or establish a business in the UK for 2 years if you have been awarded a qualification from an eligible university in the last 5 years.

Yes, your school must be listed on the relevant list for the date you graduated. To see the eligible schools, please check the eligible university lists depending on your graduation year.

You cannot apply if you have already been granted a Graduate visa or a Doctorate Extension Scheme visa, even if your university is on the eligible list for that year.

With an HPI visa, you can work in most jobs, look for work, be self-employed, live in the UK with your partner and children, if they’re eligible and do voluntary work.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to extend an HPI visa.

You can only study with an HPI visa if your chosen course is not eligible for a student visa. If your course is eligible for a student visa, you can apply for a Student visa instead, or extend your Student visa if you already have one.

You can book a session with us to speak to one of our immigration lawyers. We can answer your case-specific questions and guide you in the right direction.
