What Is the Global Talent Visa and Who Is It For?
First launched in 2020, the UK Global Talent Visa replaced the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) route. It is designed to attract top global talent and future leaders to contribute to the UK’s thriving innovation and cultural sectors.
The visa supports:
- Recognised leaders in their field (Exceptional Talent)
- Emerging professionals with clear potential (Exceptional Promise)
Unlike traditional work visas, there are no employer ties or job role restrictions. You have the freedom to work in your field, however and wherever suits you best.
Fields Covered Under the Global Talent Visa
Global Talent endorsement is available across a wide spectrum of disciplines:
- Science, Medicine, Engineering, Social Sciences and Humanities
Endorsed by: Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, British Academy, or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) - Digital Technology
Open to technical and commercial professionals in fields such as software engineering, cybersecurity, product development, AI and more.
Note: As of May 2025, Tech Nation has been replaced by a new endorsing body. - Arts and Culture
Including sub-routes for architecture, fashion design, film and television, literature, visual and performing arts, museums, and galleries.
Each sector has its own set of criteria and expectations tailored to its professional standards.
Talent vs Promise: Choosing the Right Route
- Exceptional Talent is for those already regarded as leaders in their field — typically with over 5 years of experience and a strong international track record. ILR is available after 3 years.
- Exceptional Promise is designed for early-career individuals who have demonstrated strong potential and are on a path to leadership. ILR is available after 5 years.
Choosing the correct route is essential, as endorsement criteria differ. Immigration Connection can help assess which path fits your experience and background.

Understanding the Endorsement Process
The Global Talent route is usually a two-stage process:
- Stage 1: Endorsement
Applicants apply to an approved body in their field. This stage assesses your career to date, your achievements, and how you meet specific field criteria. - Stage 2: Visa Application
Once endorsed, you apply to the Home Office within 3 months to obtain your visa.
There are also fast-track routes for:
- Academic or research roles secured through open competition
- Prestigious fellowships (listed by endorsing bodies such as the Royal Society)
- Researchers funded through UKRI-endorsed grants (at least £30,000 over 2 years)
Applications under the peer-reviewed standard route may take 1 to 8 weeks depending on complexity.
Note: Stage 1 approval does not automatically extend your current UK immigration permission.
Applying Without Endorsement: Prestigious Prizes Route
If you’ve won a recognised international award listed in the UK’s official guidance, you may skip endorsement and go straight to the visa stage.
This route covers prizes in:
- Science and research
- Technology and innovation
- Arts and culture
- Literature and film
You must be the named recipient of the award (not a group or team) and meet other criteria listed under Appendix Global Talent. View full list of Eligible Prizes for the Global Talent Visa.
Can I Bring My Family?

- 3 weeks if applying from outside the UK
- 8 weeks if applying from within the UK
- Priority and super priority services may reduce wait times
